If you look up the word orthodontics in the dictionary, you will read something like this... the specialized dental field that deals with misalignment of a person's teeth or how a person's upper and lower teeth fit together when they bite or chew something. However, while that may be a perfectly accurate and medically correct definition, there is considerably more to orthodontics than a dry and dusty definition can indicate.
It is certainly true that crooked teeth and an improper bite can cause numerous complicated dental problems. For example, teeth that are crooked or badly aligned can wear badly, and are harder to clean resulting in an increased risk of decay, gingivitis and gum disease. Therefore, while we have no intention of ignoring or discounting those potentially serious problems in any way. However, perhaps the largest benefit of orthodontic treatments is psychological, with a lifetime of positive effects.
While most people are familiar with the old adage of not judging a book by its cover, and most people will claim not to, the fact is that modern society, in general, is extremely focused on appearances. How one looks can affect how one is perceived in school, at work, and in virtually all social situations. In fact, first impressions are just that, impressions that are formed within seconds of meeting a person for the first time. While it is true that numerous things go into creating a favorable first impression, an unsightly smile is certainly not one of them. People who are considered attractive appeal to the senses and are often perceived to be more intelligent. In fact, they can actually earn higher incomes. Although standards of beauty vary from place to place, crooked and unsightly teeth always have a negative effect on the person's overall appearance and orthodontics can solve that.
There are fewer truer statements that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder'. Therefore, when a person looks in a mirror and does not see beauty or even attractiveness, simply because of something like buck teeth or an overbite, it plays havoc with their self-esteem. It is even worse when someone is self-conscious about their smile. Either they tend to smile a lot less, which is extremely sad or they try and cover their mouth when smiling or laughing. And, of course, the fact that dental issues can cause constant discomfort, including migraines, neck and shoulder pain, speech problems, etc. creates additional complications. Treating the cause and thus, eliminating the pain and discomfort does much to contribute towards person's mental outlook and quality of life.
While there is little question that many orthodontic treatments can be long and arduous procedures, the result is more than worth it. Orthodontics has been known to change the quintessential wall flower into a smiling, and radiantly confident, person who not only dresses differently, but behaves differently. All of which stems from the fact they now feel different about themselves. They feel more attractive, are more confident and are happier, which improves the quality of life itself and that is a priceless gift. If your child seems shy or unsure, and they have crooked teeth, giving them the gift of a beautiful smile may be all that is needed to help them to spread their wings.
