Considering Invisalign®, but want to know how long the process takes? Thankfully, the process tends to be quicker than that of traditional braces; however, that is not to say that results are seen overnight. Each patient has varying issues, which will ultimately dictate how long the entire process takes. However, there are a few general guidelines that can be helpful to become familiar with when considering Invisalign®. Keep reading to find out more!
The timeline for Invisalign® treatment
Below is a quick overview of Invisalign® treatment, including how long it typically lasts.
Generally speaking
For the most part, Invisalign® treatment takes anywhere from six months to a year and a half. Most patients who qualify for Invisalign® do not need it longer than a year and a half; however, in some scenarios, it may be required for up to two years. On the other hand, some patients have very minor issues, which results in only a few months of treatment.
The specifics
Individuals who have mild cases of crookedness or crowding may only need Invisalign® treatment for a few months. Because the aligners force the teeth to shift altogether, the progress is pretty quick when the problems are minor. As far as moderate cases of crookedness or crowding, as well as protrusion or bite issues, the dentist may recommend a year or so of Invisalign® treatment. Those that have severe cases of crookedness, crowding, bite issues or even gaps may require multiple years of treatment, in conjunction with other orthodontic treatments too.
Another thing to note about Invisalign® treatment timelines is that discipline is required. A lot of patients think that the treatment is easy and flexible since the aligners are removable. However, the truth of the matter is that the aligners have to be worn for at least 22 hours a day or the timeline and results get skewed. Those who become lazy or lax with their Invisalign® will have to undergo treatment for longer, sometimes for up to a few years. Additionally, it can be more costly because the series of aligners may not match up with the progress that the teeth are making.
Other things to know
When considering Invisalign® treatment, it is important to understand that the timeline is typically determined at the start of the process, which gives patients an idea of what to expect. However, the timeline can change based on discipline, the progress and how well the patient's oral cavity responds to treatment. Some people's teeth do not adapt quickly, which can result in longer treatment times. On the other hand, some may see progress within just a few months, resulting in quicker succession.
