As a dentist, one of the most important tasks we have is ensuring that our patients remain in optimum health and that they are never susceptible to any kind of gum disease. What we have found is that a large number of people across the country are starting to experience the symptoms of gum disease because they do not visit the dentist on the regular basis. Regular visits to the dentist are your best friend when it comes to staving off the onset of gingivitis and periodontal disease. By cleaning your teeth, we can decrease the likelihood that you will develop one of these conditions.
Signs That You May Have Gum Disease
If you ever experience bleeding from your gums, have consistent bad breath, or have gums that are achy and swollen you may be experiencing the early symptoms, or at least the early warning signs, of gingivitis. If you have any of these symptoms, it is recommended that you visit our dentist office immediately because gingivitis can progress to full-blown periodontal disease if left untreated. Periodontal disease can be extremely damaging to your mouth, your gums, and your teeth. It can even cause you to lose teeth.
What Causes Gum Disease
Typically, gum disease will occur due to a lack of oral hygiene and preventative dental care. If plaque is allowed to form on the portion of your teeth underneath your gums, you can develop gum disease. Also, some people are at a greater risk for this disease including pregnant women, diabetics, and smokers due to a lack of proper blood flow to the gums.
Preventing Gum Disease
One of the best pieces of advice that we can give you as a dentist is to brush twice a day and to make sure that you know how to properly brush your teeth. We understand that most people have been brushing their teeth since age 2, and pretty much have it down to a science. However, an occasional refresher is not a bad thing. We recommend that when you brush your teeth, you do so a minimum of two times each day and brush for a minimum of two minutes every time you brush. We also highly recommend that you visit our dentist office a minimum of twice each year. These three guidelines combined are called the 2-2-2 rule. In addition, you must remember to floss your teeth at least once per day. When you do, go all the way along your teeth, rather than stopping at your gum line. Flossing is one of the most important things you can do for the health of your gums.

Sometimes gum disease cannot be prevented. In this case, it is critical that you have it treated immediately and before it can spread or become worst.
